Improving the documentation in mass casualty incidents by combining electronic and paper based approaches

چکیده
This work presents a concept for combining paper based and electronic objects in order to improve information access in mass casualty incidents. We propose to improve the relief workers’ documentation task by combining PBPTs (paper based patient tags) with RBPTs (RFID based patient tags). This combination, which we call RFID Enhanced Patient Tags (REPTs), is capable of combining advantages from both approaches. On the paper part paramedics can easily scribble down medical results, it can be read and extended easily by succeeding relief units, colored paper bars can be identified even from far away and for extending patient related information nothing but a pen is needed. The use of electronically readable tags enables the paramedics to log their patient contacts, provide the incident commanders with evolving information and to acquire the patient location.

Hybrid approach for management of patient-related information in mass casualty incidents
This work demonstrates how a combination of paper based and electronic objects can improve information access in mass casualty incidents. At the moment patient-related information is documented on Paper Based Patient Tags (PBPTs) which are attached to every patient. Current research in the field focuses on the introduction of RFID based patient tags (RBPTs) which depend on more complex tools or...
متن کاملeTriage: A Wireless Communication Service Platform for Advanced Rescue Operations
In mass casualty incidents (MCIs) such as earthquakes, medical resources are overwhelmed by the number and severity of casualties. In this paper, we propose a wireless communication service platform in such situations for advanced rescue operations named eTriage. For this purpose, we have developed electronic triage tags by combining a small vital sensor with a wireless device. The electronic t...
متن کاملA Wireless First Responder Handheld Device for Rapid Triage, Patient Assessment and Documentation during Mass Casualty Incidents
Medical care at mass casualty incidents and disasters requires rapid patient triage and assessment, acute care and disposition often in the setting of overwhelming numbers of victims, limited time, and little resources. Current systems rely on a paper triage tag on which rescuers and medical providers mark the patient's triage status and record limited information on injuries and treatments adm...
متن کاملIndirect Tracking of Patients in Mass Casualty Incidents
In MCIs (mass casualty incidents) patient tracking is cumbersome when using paper based approaches. Due to the fact that the spatial positions of the patients are essential in MCIs, we equipped the relief workers with electronic devices. We analyzed two concepts for patient tracking: direct and indirect tracking. The indirect tracking turned out to be superior with regard to the requirements fr...
